Current Work

Our current research interests are discrimination of disease-causing mutations, structure-based ligand/inhibitor design, drug repurposing, peptide inhibitor design for anti-bacterial, anti-virial and anti-cancer therapeutics, protein engineering and vaccine design, and protein/RNA structure and function prediction. We integrate computational (Bioinformatics by algorithm development and machine learning) and experimental techniques (molecular biology and cell biology) to speed up discovery.

Background

Bio

Prof Zhou obtained his PhD in Chemical Physics from State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA in 1990. After a brief adventure as one of the founding members of Applied Physics and Chemistry Laboratory in California, Prof Zhou was back to academe as a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Carol Hall at North Carolina State University from 1994 to 1995. In 1995, Prof Zhou was awarded a NSF postdoctoral fellowship in Mathematical Biology as well as a NIH postdoctoral fellowship to work with Nobel Laureate Prof Martin Karplus in protein folding at Harvard University. He joined the Department of Physiology and Biophysics of State University of New York at Buffalo as an Assistant Professor in 2000 and became a tenured Associate Professor in 2004. Prof Zhou moved to Indiana University Schools of Informatics and Medicine at Indianapolis as a tenured full Professor in 2006 and was appointed as the director of Bioinformatics Program at IU School of Informatics in 2007. In 2013, Prof Zhou was appointed as the Professor of Computational Biology at Griffith University and became a member of the Institute for Glycomics. Prof Zhou is an established leader in structural bioinformatics particularly in the area of protein structure prediction, protein binding, and protein design by developing new mathematical algorithms and machine-learning techniques. He has published over 130 papers, most of which are in computational structural biology/ bioinformatics, were cited over 5000 times with h-index of 40, according to Science Citation Index. His move to Griffith University is motivated by the ability to integrate computational prediction with experimental validation at the Institute for Glycomics. His current interest includes characterisation of synonymous mutations, structure-based ligand/inhibitor design, peptide inhibitor design for anti-bacterial, anti-virial and anti-cancer therapeutics, protein engineering and vaccine design, and discrimination of diseasing causing genetic variants from neural ones.
