Overview
Current Work
|
I have an international reputation in viral immunology, focussing on virus-host relationships, with the aim of developing new therapies. I am internationally recognised for my arbovirus work. The core research activities in my laboratory are in-depth investigations of viral diseases, their pathogenesis, treatment and prevention and virus-host interactions, including the role of soluble mediators, cell subsets and viral factors in virus-induced disease. My laboratory has a major focus on commercial translation with recent patents and licenses: i. Recent work from my lab (with Dr Lara Herrero) showing that pentosan can protect against cartilage damage has led to licensing of that discovery to an Australian biotech company (Paradigm BioPharmaceuticals). ii. We have developed new antivirals against dengue virus. Biotron Ltd has taken exclusive license to IP on our antiviral agents for dengue virus. iii. We (with Dr Adam Taylor) have recently developed and patented a vaccine candidate for chikungunya virus. iv. We have developed a vaccine for Zika virus, preclinical testing are presently underway. |

Supervision Overview
Supervised a number of successful higher degree scholars (10 completed; 8 PhD students have completed in 2004-2016), most of whom have continued with a career in science. Nine of my fifteen Honours students obtained HI (2 University Medalist). Mentored 4 postdoctoral fellows, including a NHMRC CDA2, 4 Peter Doherty, 1 ARC APDI, 1 ARC DECRA and 4 other postdoctoral fellows.

Background
Bio
|
I am a viral immunologist, with a particular interest in the pathogenesis and treatment of viral-induced inflammatory diseases. I am presently a NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and Professor and Principal Research Leader at the Institute for Glycomics, Griffith University. Perhaps my greatest achievement has been the large body of work over 10 years identifying mechanisms in alphavirus musculoskeletal disease. My contribution to fundamental research is complemented by clinical and translational ‘spin-offs’ supported by highly productive collaborations with clinician-scientists and commercial partners. He is actively engaged in commercialization projects to develop anti-inflammatory drugs, antivirals and vaccines through research option agreements with Biotech and Pharma. He has received numerous awards and honours from major Australian funding and research bodies. He was made Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology for his contributions to the field of virology. |
