Overview

Current Work

Research: Investigating the neuromotor mechanisms underlying the development of sarcopenia in older adults; Developing exercise interventions for slowing or reversing the effects of osteoporosis; Examining the effects of surgical and physical activity interventions on paediatric muscuolskeletal conditions of the feet and lower limbs; Examination of the the utility of musculoskeletal assessment tools used clinically, to assess function and injury.

Learning & Teaching: Development of the 'hot seat' method - an authentic, action based, simulated learning activity, used for teaching the physiotherapy patient interview to students; Enhancing physiotherapy student preparedness for clinical practicum through Transition to Placement (T2P) - an innovative, high fidelity, simulated learning immersion activity; Improving practical exam preparation of physiotherapy students through the development of video and other multi-media related resources.

Learning and Teaching

Contribution to Learning and Teaching

Dr Horan's primary learning and teaching role involves convening and teaching the foundational musculoskeletal physiotherapy courses (7013AHS, 7017AHS, and 7020AHS) in the Master of Physiotherapy Program. Additionally, he teaches students in the Bachelor of Exercise Science and Graduate Diploma of Exercise Science Programs in the areas of orthopaedics, biomechanics and exercise rehabilitation. Dr Horan is actively engaged in learning and teaching scholarship, having developed and collaborated on a range of innovative initiatives aimed at improving physiotherapy student learning outcomes. His work has been presented and published nationally and internationally, and he has been recognized by peers through various awards and grants.

Teaching Philosophy

Dr Horan's teaching philosophy is centered around the notion of forming partnerships with his students and exposing them to authentic, action-learning environments, where frequent and varied forms of feedback are inherent within the learning and teaching activities he designs. His overarching aim is to prepare knowledgeable, professionally competent, and uniquely Griffith physiotherapists for clinical physiotherapy practice.
