Learning and Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is that it should be student-centred with the teacher engaged with the student in the learning journey. Nursing graduates attaining attributes such as reflective, creative and critical thinking skills, effective written and oral communication skills, demonstrating awareness of cultural differences, and engaging in professional values within a framework of social justice and ethical behaviour are important.
My teaching portfolio tracks my engagement with pedagogical literature to critically reflect on my teaching practices towards providing inclusive and student-centred learning. To me teaching is about students achieving intellectually challenging outcomes that will place them in good stead to know, understand, and apply their learning in a significant way as future registered nurses. As academics I believe it is our responsibility to ensure our graduate nurses are knowledgeable, competent and work ready to provide safe quality care and to uphold the good name of the nursing profession. To achieve this outcome, I use a variety of teaching techniques that appeal to the different learning styles of students. I ensure the content of my teaching is informed by current nursing research so that what is taught is evidenced-based.
I have a sustained excellent teaching track record as demonstrated by being awarded the ‘Griffith Award for Excellence in Teaching’ in 2008 and ‘Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award’ in 2006, including receiving high commendation in the category of ’Inclusive Teaching’ in 2012.

Bio

Associate Professor Saras Henderson has extensive experience as a registered nurse and academic at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Griffith University. Saras was previously the Program Director Health Professional Education and currently is Director BN Honours and supervises Honours, Masters and HDR students. Saras is also the Deputy Chair of Griffith University Human Research Ethics Committee. Saras has expertise in community nursing and her research includes multicultural communities and health service delivery, self-management of chronic diseases, including health promotion and primary health care. Saras has a National and International reputation in multicultural research through her work in this area, several conference presentations and publications.
