Overview

Current Work

As Pro Vice Chancellor (Health) I am responsible for leading the Health Group Executive Team, directing a clear strategic plan aligned to the core values, mission and strategic direction of the University and representing and promoting the interests and ethos of the University at national and international engagements.

The Health Group consists of the School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Applied Psychology, School of Dentistry and Oral Health, School of Human Services and Social Work, School of Medical Science, School of Medicine, School of Nursing and Midwifery, the School of Pharmacy and the Menzies Health Institute Queensland.

My research career has been devoted to understanding speech, language and literacy development in children - one of the most common childhood developmental impairments.

Currently, I am the Chief Investigator for two NHMRC Centers for Research Excellence: Speech and Language Neurobiology and Child Language, and I also the lead investigator of the landmark Early Language in Victoria Study (ELVS).

Presently I hold four NHMRC project grants, one NHMRC partnership grant and am a Senior Scientist on a $28 million CDC grant. I have received in excess of $50 million in competitive funding and collaborate extensively with a range of research teams nationally and internationally.

I am currently the recipient of a number of prestigious honorary positions, including:
- Inaugural Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences
- Fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences
- Fellow of the UK Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
- Fellow of Speech Pathology Australia

Background

Bio

I have over 20 years’ experience as a research academic and paediatric speech pathologist. After receiving my PhD from the University of London, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher and clinician at the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and the Institute of Child Health, University College of London.

Returning to Australia in 1999, I was appointed Professor of Paediatric Speech Pathology at both La Trobe University (1999-2007) and the Royal Children’s Hospital (1999-2005). In 2005 I became Director of the Healthy Development Research Theme at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and Director of the Speech Pathology Department at the Royal Children’s Hospital. I was awarded my first NHMRC Practitioner Fellowship in 2008 and again in 2015.

I was Associate Director of Clinical and Public Health, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and Professor of Speech Pathology, University of Melbourne for a number of years before being appointed the inaugural Director of the Menzies Health Institute Queensland in 2015. In August 2016, I was commenced my current role as Pro Vice Chancellor (Health).

Over my career I have shaped multidisciplinary research teams and provided the leadership responsible for a series of landmark research studies that have transformed our current-day understanding of the epidemiological and natural history of common and debilitating speech, language and literacy problems in children. This includes the world’s first RCT language prevention intervention in community cohort of toddlers and pre-schoolers (The Early Language in Victoria Study: ELVS).

Contributing extensively to research service and mentorship, I have produced a substantial body of original research and have contributed extensively towards understanding speech, language and literacy development in children.
