Learning and Teaching

Contribution to Learning and Teaching

I currently sit on the editorial board of the journal, Art, Design and Communications in Higher Education. From 2015-2017 I was a judge at the International Undergraduate Awards (UA), a body which seeks to determine excellence in undergraduate research in art & design. In 2016 I was the chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee at the School of Design, Communications and Information Technology at the University of Newcastle.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe I have an advanced teaching philosophy based on teaching at every level, from primary, special, high school, community education right through to tertiary teaching. I take a constructivist/ interpretivist view to education and this leads me to the philosophical position that my role is to facilitate individuals to learn, not pass on knowledge. I do this through conversation, by elevating the role formative feedback plays in learning and by recognising that there are different learning styles. Therefore my delivery involves presenting written, spoken, visual forms of material to students, both analogue and digital. I seek to provide group conversations, but also acknowledge the importance of inclusion of individuals and their preference for engagement through a variety of mediums. I value individual learning, but also value social, group learning and co-creativity. I encourage reflection and believe this is one of the most powerful learning methods. I seek to help students develop explicit understanding of how they learn.
