Current Work

My work at present involves a range of school/community partnership projects that encompass creative and age-effective pedagogies in the early years, and an arts-based curriculum partnership in a Brisbane school with a high proportion of refugee students. I am an experienced teacher, researcher and leader in pedagogical and curriculum innovation in educational contexts (primary, secondary and higher-education). Case studies, action research, narrative inquiry, autoethnography, arts-informed and arts-based approaches.

I am presently co-chair (with Professor Donna Pendergast) of the organising committee planning the Creativity Summit in Initial Teacher Education, 12 June, 2018.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is based in the belief that all people can learn but not necessarily in the same way or at the same rate. Thus I try to create a learning environment that values the contributions, interests and orientations of all learners, and an environment where they can take the normal risks associated with learning new knowledge in safe and supportive ways. For learning to take place, students must be able to engage cognitively, emotionally and actively in processes that permit experimentation and exploration in areas that are unfamiliar to them, or which are just outside their experience, as well as those which draw on individual students’ considerable personal knowledge and experience. Learning should enable students with the skills to understand and to shape the world in which they live. It should challenge, extend and excite them, and allow opportunities for them to imagine alternative futures for themselves, their families, their communities, and the world at large.

Research by Higher Degree Supervision or Scholarship

Supervision Overview

I am currently supervising seven RHD students, two of whom are remote candidates in Singapore and Taiwan, respectively. Topics include: the implementation of drama in the Australian Curriculum; the impact of drama on efficacy, engagement, and identity; teacher reinterpretations of the teaching of grammar in light of NAPLAN; feedback in the assessment process, critical thinking in the primary years, teachers understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. Methods include: case studies, action research, narrative inquiry, authoethnography, and reflective practitioner research.

Bio

Dr Madonna Stinson is an experienced teacher and teacher educator, having worked across all sectors of schooling. She is currently working on research projects that encompass age-effective pedagogies in the early years, and arts, community and curriculum partnerships in a Brisbane school with a high proportion of refugee students. She has written extensively on drama and education, and curriculum design, and is in demand as a keynote speaker and masterclass workshop leader. Madonna was awarded a Life Membership of Drama Queensland in 2014, for her contribution to drama education. She has worked in teacher education in Singapore, UK and Australia.

She is Managing Editor of NJ: the Drama Australia journal (a peer-reviewed journal published by Taylor and Francis). In addition she is a member of the editorial boards of RIDE: the journal of Applied Theatre and Performance; DATE-Asia; and Pedagogies.
