Learning and Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy keenly embraces my practice-led educational research of studio education; encouraging students to create their own self-directed strategies as they ‘learn-how-to-learn’ in design education today. A key aim of my approach to education is to continually attempt to bridge the gap between student engagement and the changing shape of specialist design education. Through a supported reflective awareness, I encourage students to make their own meta-cognitive connections within their creative learning journeys, with guidance. My pedagogical approach focuses on empowering students and supporting sessional tutors alike, to improve the quality of their educative processes and learning environments in a mutual ‘bottom up’ and ‘top down’ approach. This philosophy is delivered pedagogically in terms of the teaching and learning materials, course outlines and varied lesson plans I design. It is my intention that we mutually work together within our distinct community of practice, and via our face-to-face experiences in physical spaces and online platforms to improve in our multiple roles as teachers, colleagues, designers, researchers and students. I always strive to stay current with ongoing educational research and methods to remain at the forefront of teaching delivery.

My iterative teaching approach, which I continually refine in the way I adapt short-term delivery and in longitudinal pedagogical goals, is wholly underpinned by my empathetic human-centred and socially conscious focus towards students, peers, colleagues within my local university community and global design network. In my vision for future-focused design education, I encourage critical inquiry and a balance of theoretical and practical approaches to design. My strength in teaching lies in my ability to verbally and visually explain complex research methodologies, methods, historical movements and terminology in clearly understood terms while igniting a passion in students for design research, history and theory. In doing so, I can explicitly make the links between the past and a constantly evolving future design practice. I integrate theory and practice by embedding them in my teaching materials as a means to facilitate and lead students towards managing their own self-guided journey as passionate designers, as they deliver strong outcomes for projects and assessments, and as they become versatile, employable and informed thinkers and designers.

My teaching philosophy encompasses an open-door policy for students or staff to approach me for guidance, support and intervention at any point in their university journey or career. This is also with the intention of fostering a positive feeling of mutual trust and respect to all learners and their particular learning experience.

Background

Bio

Dr Lorraine Marshalsey SFHEA is the Honours Program Director (Design, Fine Art, Photography and Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art) at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University in Australia. Lorraine’s teaching philosophy keenly embraces practice-led studio learning; encouraging students to create their own self-directed strategies as they ‘learn-how-to-learn’ in art and design education today. A key aim of Lorraine’s approach to creative teaching and research is to continually attempt to bridge the gap between student engagement and the changing shape of specialist art and design learning spaces. Lorraine’s pedagogical approach focuses on empowering students and tutors alike, to improve the quality of their educative processes and learning environments in a mutual ‘bottom up’ and ‘top down’ approach. She has taught in the United Kingdom, India, China and Australia.

Lorraine is also an active educational researcher, who produces international research on learning spaces and the studio as a site for learning. Lorraine regularly deliver papers on this topic including at Tate Liverpool in the UK and the Singapore Institute of Technology. Lorraine graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1998 with a BA (Hons) degree in Design and Applied Arts (Ceramics) and from Edinburgh Napier University in 2013 with an MA in Design (Graphics). Lorraine was awarded the Global Excellence Initiative Fund PhD studentship under the theme of Education in Art, Design and Architecture in 2014 and in 2017, she completed her doctorate at Glasgow School of Art in the UK. Her interests include studio learning, curriculum development, sensory affect and developing creative research methodologies for teaching and learning. She is also a member of NSEAD (The National Society for Education in Art and Design).
