Learning and Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

I strive to equip my students with the ability to synthesise and critically analyse information. These skills empower students to become independent thinkers, successful problem-solvers and sets them up for a lifetime of continuous learning and achievement. I achieve this outcome by varying my approach to teaching across first, second and third year courses. In first year, I provide students with the fundamental knowledge that forms the platform for building more detailed understanding of the discipline in subsequent years. During first year, students undertake pre-determined experiments, are given learning resources, and are provided with explicit, step-by-step instructions about how to prepare assignments. In second year, students again undertake pre-defined studies but become responsible for collecting, processing and analysing data. They locate resources (e.g. the primary literature) independently and are provided with detailed explanations of what is expected on their assessment items, but less detail about how to do the assignment. In third year, students take responsibility for identifying research questions, designing studies, collecting, analysing and interpreting data. At this point I act more as a facilitator, providing advice about specific questions they raise. Hence, by the time they graduate, students are able to apply ideas and concepts taught at first and second year in new contexts.

Background

Bio

I am a marine ecologist with diverse research interests that span tropical and temperate environments and benthic and pelagic habitats. I completed my undergraduate training at James Cook University in north Queensland, Australia and obtained a PhD from the University of Sydney in 2000. After my PhD I spent 18 months working as an environmental consultant at The Ecology Lab Pty Ltd before returning to the University of Sydney as an ARC Post-doctoral Fellow. I was appointed as a lecturer in marine ecology at Griffith University in 2002 and am currently an Associate Professor and Discipline Head of Marine Science in the Griffith School of Environment and Science.
