Learning and Teaching

Contribution to Learning and Teaching

Background experience in L&T:
Over ten years of teaching experience at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, lecturing students from five different institutions in four different countries: University of Waikato (New Zealand), University of São Paulo (Brazil), the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (USA), Southern Cross University (Australia) and Griffith University.

(a) Leadership in L&T both within and external to the University:
• Recently concluded an OLT (Office for Learning and Teaching) strategic grant on online business simulation - Chief Investigator - $187,000 – based at UQ. During this project, I developed a case study (co-authored with A/Prof Pierre Benckendorff, University of Queensland). This case study is based on the pedagogy and assessment methods used in my course. Dissemination of the case study has taken place through workshops organised at higher education institutions in Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide involving just over 100 academics from various institutions in Australia and New Zealand (for more details, visit www.bizsims.edu.au ). These workshops enabled me to showcase my expertise in the pedagogy and assessment of online business simulations to those attending. Some of the other outcomes, impacts and relevance of this OLT project where I have been directly involved include:
(i) Engaging with a network of 170 project community members;
(ii)Developing and collecting 1100+ surveys distributed to undergraduate and postgraduate students across 7 institutions as well as conducting 23 interviews with experienced business educators and four senior managers;
(iii)Developing an online toolkit, papers, reports, case studies; Simulation Learning Barometer; and writing the “Online Business Simulation Good Practice Guide”.

• Based on my growing reputation in the domain of online business simulations, I have been invited to deliver two presentations at GU on that topic:
(i) “Active Learning: Engaged and Engaging” seminar organised by Learning Futures – 5 Nov 2014;
(ii) “Fire Up” session as part of the Excellence in Teaching week – 8 Nov 2014.

(b) Leadership in L&T within the Science Group level:
• Program Director, Griffith Aviation Postgraduate Programs (January 2014 – present)
My leadership experience includes being the Program Director for three Aviation Postgraduate degrees since January 2014. I have led a number of activities to enhance student engagement and learning:
(i) Development and launch of the GCertAirportMgt: Responsible for writing and developing the program proposal for this new innovative program which is unique in Australia. This task was completed during the first four months of my arrival at Griffith University. This program is a partnership between Griffith Aviation, Griffith Business School (GBS) and Queensland Airports Ltd (QAL). As per other parts of this application, I have a number of other research partnerships with QAL. Their involvement in the GCertAirportMgt was due to the confidence they put in my work. Also, as per invitation of the Mongolian government, I visited Ulaanbaatar in December 2014 to discuss a one-off delivery of this program in Mongolia. Between January and April 2015, in collaboration with Griffith International Business Development Unit, I wrote a specific program proposal to suit the needs of the Mongolian Government. Negotiations are currently taking place to deliver this program;
(ii) Enhancing Program Quality: Includes maintaining program coherence and consistency, particularly in the online environment and coordinating the development of a narrative and mini-lecture for the suite of courses comprising our programs. Oversaw the development of resources (e.g content narrative and mini-lectures) for each of the 12 topics/modules within the following courses: 7501NSC, 7503NSC, 7504NSC, 7505NSC, 7507NSC, 7512NSC and 7560NSC. A total grant of $52k was approved for this task. Analysis from SEQs data from the courses offered in Semester 1, 2015 has shown that in most cases the evaluation from these resources has ranged from 3.9 to 4.8 out of 5.0, with higher marks notable among the online cohort, which is the primarily target cohort for this initiative;

• I champion Blended Learning Strategies
One of the many advantages of AO is the opportunity to integrate external and internal students, providing the chance for them to work in groups as a single cohort of students. I have developed a flipped classroom approach, with some of my lectures professionally recorded at the ‘green room’, an online narrative where students are guided through the various resources presented at Learning@Griffith. I also led the development of online resources at other courses, as explained above.
• Integration of theory and knowledge with professional practice to develop solutions to real world issues (Principle 3).
Simulations are especially useful as a learning tool because they model aspects of reality in a safe environment, allowing learners to make errors that do not have real repercussions. The simulation can be extended into the classroom and the real world by connecting events to content presented in the course, using case studies and guest speakers to provide real world examples of what students are experiencing in the simulation. In addition, authentic tasks presented in the simulation involve clear goals with real world relevance and the production (rather than reproduction) of knowledge. In my course I include a wider narrative of events impacting on the simulation through weekly newsletters and news broadcasts informing students of possible real world changes in the environment, including, for example, the increase in oil prices, grounding of a particular type of aircraft, decrease in demand in particular airport etc. Students are then required to make changes in their airlines, using analytical thinking to justify their decision. “Engaging with the course actively via the simulation was very motivating and I felt cemented the theory”; “Relevancy and conciseness of lectures. Airline management simulator as a good environment to have theories and strategies implemented and validated”.

• Disseminating knowledge about my innovative teaching techniques through publishing in L&T (e.g. Lohmann, 2014; Parratt, Hutchinson, Lohmann et al., in press), with three other publications under development as a result of this OLT grant.

Teaching Philosophy

Based on the original ‘Seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education’ developed by Chickering and Gamson in 1987. Although I have engaged with all the seven principles in different stages of my career, in recent years I particularly rely on four of them:
• I encourage contact between my students and myself. Teaching is a two-way avenue and as such, it is not possible to learn without interaction. My experience shows that Anglo-Saxon aviation/management students are more grade-oriented than learning-oriented so I use their assignments to engage with them and the content;
• I give prompt feedback. Students tend to be more engaged (and educated) when they receive both solicited and unsolicited feedback on their work. This links with the previous principle of encouraging contact with students – “Easy to communicate with fast and fairly clear responses tasks at hand fairly clear” and “Gui is very caring and has plenty of time for his students and will answer questions ASAP”;
• I encourage active learning with the understanding that (a) learning is by nature an active endeavour and (b) that different people learn in different ways (Meyers and Jones, 1993);
• I communicate high expectations, through my internal motivation or external encouragement, expecting that student participation in and sharing of leadership tasks (Scott and Tobe 1995). “Has been a very challenging course so far. The assignment was really challenging and Gui provided me with some very useful assistance”;
• I communicate my goals through a detailed and carefully planned assessment instructions.
