Overview
Current Work
| I am a historian who works on international history, transnational history, and settler colonial history with a particular interest in critics of empire and liberal progressive actors in interwar international networks. My pursuit of alternative global histories of colonialism focuses on the circulation of progressive ideas and their diverse applications in relation to settler colonialism, gender and race politics, and on the role of the social sciences, experts, and networks in answering the ‘big’ questions of the first half of the twentieth century such as the future of empire and the role of reformed 'race relations' and the place of cultural diversity in promoting world peace. |

Background
Bio
| Fiona Paisley is a cultural historian who studies the history of human rights and the politics of race and gender in a variety of early twentieth century imperial and colonial settings. Her focus is on the ways in which Europeans and Indigenous peoples have separately and sometimes in cooperation debated the morality of settler colonialism in Australia and the Pacific, and sought to deploy new ideas within liberal internationalism, the social sciences, and decolonization to the settler colonial question in the first half of the twentieth century . |
