Overview

Current Work

Currently I teach into six main areas of the Queensland Conservatorium undergraduate and postgraduate courses. I am the Performance Study oboe/cor anglais lecturer for all years and a supervisor of Honours and masters students. I coach tutorials for chamber music groups, orchestral sectionals and oboe tutorials and teach into the large weekly Wind Workshop for undergraduate wind students. I am the Convenor of the Orchestral Repertoire course, a year 1 subject for all classical instrumental students and Optimal Performance Practice, an new elective course beginning in Trimester 3, 2017. I perform regularly in solo, chamber music and orchestral concerts and am the founder of the Lunaire Collective, Ensemble in Residence at QCGU and Co-artistic Director of the Tyalgum Music Festival, NSW.

I am an Associate member of the Queensland Research Centre and currently completing my PhD which measures the effects of learning practical optimal experience techniques on the practice and performance of undergraduate instrumental students. I am in demand as a speaker and workshop leader both nationally and internationally and regularly give conference papers in the specialist area of optimal experience and music.

Learning and Teaching

Contribution to Learning and Teaching

My research work as part of my PhD on optimal experience in music has enabled me to cover in depth the recent discoveries in neuroscience and the ways in which expert performance learning is optimised. As a result I am able to contribute techniques and strategies through all my teaching work to maximise learning outcomes. I have been invited internationally to lecture and demonstrate these techniques for both students and staff of prestigious Universities, such as the Sibelius Academy, Finland and Den Haag,The Netherlands as well as within Australia and New Zealand.

My other contributions to learning and teaching at QCGU have been through my membership of numerous working parties such as the chamber music working party which has resulted in many improvements to course design and assessment processes. As the Convenor of Orchestral Repertoire, a year 1 course for classical instrumentalists, I have redesigned the course requirements to align with best practice.
 

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is based around the belief in life-long learning and the power of motivation in learning. As an international expert in the field of optimal experience or 'being in the zone', I apply the motivational concepts from optimal experience theory to the skills of practising and performing music to allow musicians to become fully absorbed and joyful in their music making activities. This involves a personal journey for each musician and I endeavour to be flexible in my teaching so that each student can discover their own path and unique musical voice. I am passionate about the synergy that is created when both teachers and students learn and grow together in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

From an organisational perspective, I believe that setting and achieving relevant and achievable goals is crucial to development and the maintenance of motivation. To that end, throughout my teaching I stress the importance of applying organisational principles and a disciplined approach to study. My aim is that graduating students will have a strong knowledge of their own learning styles along with the high skill base necessary to enter the professional world of music. I inspire them to maintain a strong passion for music and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to the future of the music industry.
