Overview

Current Work

Drew's current research explores two themes.

The first theme examines current safety practice, and seeks to answer:
"Why is safety currently practiced the way that it is?"

This research includes critical evaluation of current practice, including examining the evidence for effectiviness of activities such as risk assessment and accident investigation. The work has a particular focus on quantitative activities such as safety metrics and probabilistic risk assessment.

The second theme address the question:
"How should safety be practiced in the future?"

This research provides a practical dimension to safety theory drawn from resilience, "Safety-II" and "Safety Differently". It provides methods for organisations to investigate and enhance the positive capacity to perform risky work safely, rather than attempting to control risk as an externality of work.

Research by Higher Degree Supervision or Scholarship

Supervision Overview

Drew is currently supervising or co-supervising nine postgraduate candidates. These are a mix of full time and part time projects, all with some industry connection. Current projects include: an observational study of explosives handling in open-cut mining; a multi-arm trial of removing external imposition of safety from supermarkets; a critical analysis of interventions to reduce interruptions in health care; a study of the different conceptions of a "safety journey" and the ways safety managers view and measure safety progress; an empirical investigation into whether pre-start briefings and checklists support mindful safety or mindless safety; a comparison of implementations of major hazard management plans; and a investigation into the role of a "safety manager", and the different forms this role can take

Background

Bio

Drew started his career as an engineer working for the Australian Department of Defence. His early work was concerned with the safety of submarines, minesweepers, and hydrographic survey vessels. Since then his interest in the intersection of safety research and safety management has led to involvement in tunnel ventilation systems under Hong Kong, railways in India, autonomous vehicles in England, radiation therapy in the USA, and occupational violence in Queensland hospitals.

Drew has previously taught or researched at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of York, Australian National University, and University of Queensland. He also presents the popular “DisasterCast” podcast, examining the history, causes, and prevention of major accidents.
