Overview

Current Work

My research interests are in the area of learning and teaching and discipline specific research into patient adherence. In the field of learning and teaching, I am passionate about providing quality learning and teaching experiences that both engage and optimise student learning. I am also focused on providing my students with opportunities to develop their employability skills which in turn produces career-ready graduates. As a result of my scholarship and reflective practice in this domain, I have conducted extensive research which I use to inform the development of my curriculum and assessment practices.

Contribution to Learning and Teaching

The innovative nature of my approach to teaching and learning is apparent by my strong commitment to developing a ‘career ready culture’ in the Bachelor of Sport Development. I have successfully and notably implemented the Employability Framework throughout the program. This is unique in the School of Allied Health Sciences as the Bachelor of Sport Development is the only program of 16 programs currently offered by AHS which has the Employability Framework integrated throughout.

Further evidence of my innovative approach to teaching and learning is my development and integration of common time study skills curriculum. My key objective of this innovation is for students to experience success in their first year which will result in student satisfaction and high retention rates. This approach is closely aligned with the Griffith University strategic priority: ‘To provide an excellent educational experience to attract and retain students who, regardless of their background, will succeed at university and become graduates of influence’. Throughout the first year of the Sport Development program, students are encouraged to attend purpose designed study skills sessions during timetabled common time. The sessions are aligned with the upcoming assessment requirements of the students across all courses in the Bachelor of Sport Development in that semester, including courses from AHS, other schools in the Health Group, and the Griffith Business School. The objective of these sessions is to achieve success in student learning by developing and progressing tertiary study skills in students while transitioning into the program. This in turn equips students and ensures they are well positioned to succeed throughout the program and in their professional careers. Through my development and delivery of this study skills curriculum, I have used current literature to inform my practice. According to the five senses of student success model (Lizzio, 2006), students who develop a sense of capability, which refers to understanding the student role and mastering academic knowledge and skills, will have higher levels of satisfaction, engagement and retention in higher education.

Teaching Philosophy

An educator is a person who creates an environment that is conducive to learning — a safe place where students can immerse themselves in a subject or discipline as they assimilate a body of requisite information, concepts, and/or skills. The learning process requires motivation, effort, and persistence. Good students enter the learning environment with a commitment to scholarship, a willingness to work, and a sense of personal responsibility toward achieving their educational goals. Good teachers provide an environment that is challenging, safe and supportive. They set goals and deadlines, and supply resources, critique performance, and provide enough stimulation to minimize distractions and sustain motivation. Despite the best intentions and methods, the most effective teacher in the world cannot teach someone who is unwilling to learn. The idea that students must be active participants in the learning process is opposed to the currently fashionable view that the student is a 'customer' and the institution is merely a vendor of qualifications and degrees.

In my role as an educator has been shaped by my tertiary qualifications and experience in education and closely aligns with the Griffith Principles to Promote Excellence in Learning and Teaching. I have three primary functions: motivator, facilitator, and mentor. These are not mutually exclusive activities, each lecture, workshop and assessment item integrates all three functions.
