CONFERENCE/SYMPOSIUM CONVENOR
15 Oct 2019
Dr Michelle Ronksley-Pavia through the PL Hub is hosting a one day symposium dedicated to exploring effective education practices and understanding how we are able to best support gifted students in our classrooms and schools. This will be a great opportunity for educators to gather from around QLD to discuss and learn essential issues that affect the field of gifted and talented education.
FELLOWSHIP/VISITING SCHOLAR
18 Oct 2018 - 18 Oct 2018
Children who have disabilities, and who also have co-occurring giftedness are described as either gifted with disabilities (GLD), or twice-exceptional, having two exceptionalities, giftedness and disability (often more than one disability). In Australia the concept of twice-exceptionality is poorly understood, particularly by schools and teachers. There are a myriad of disabilities that twice-exceptional children may have, including (but not limited to), dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders (and Asperger’s), scotopic sensitivity syndrome, dyscalculia, central auditory processing disorder, anxiety, depression etc.. In this informative session Michelle will unpack the concept of twice-exceptional children, illustrating this from her vast experience and research undertaken in this area with young people. Michelle will share her expertise about working with your child’s school to foster opportunities to develop your child’s potential, focusing on their strengths while addressing areas of need. In this session participants will be engaged in exploring the educational lives of twice-exceptional students including the highs—finding like-minded peers, and lows—such as bullying and lack of understanding by peers and teachers.
