I am a senior lecturer in Comparative Politics at the School of Government and International Relations (Griffith University) and an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Research Award Fellow (2018-2020). A regular contributor to national and international media outlets, my research focuses on the topics of authoritarian politics, democratization, dictators, election observation and Southeast Asian politics. My first book, which is entitled Behind the Façade: Elections under Authoritarianism in Southeast Asia (SUNY Press, 2016), examined why authoritarian regimes hold elections. At present, I am finishing a new book entitled The Rise of Sophisticated Authoritarianism in Southeast Asia (Cambridge University Press, 2019). Stay tuned!
