CAREER PROFILE Associate Professor Kaparaju has over 20 years of experience in environmental engineering and waste management with special emphasis on biomass-to-biofuel conversion technologies, biomass pre-treatments and renewable energy. He was the chief investigator for the research project “Integration of biogas from sugarcane residues in the sugar milling industry to reduce fossil fuel usage” funded by Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) ($ 2.9 million). Dr Kaparaju is the first researcher to demonstrate biogas production and upgrading the biogas to bio-CNG for vehicle fuel use in Australia. He was one of the first established researchers to initiate research on integrated biorefinery from lignocellulose biomass such as wheat straw, which was subsequently found applications for similar biorefinery concepts e.g. waste biorefinery and other lignocellulose biomass. To date, Dr Kaparaju has received $1.46 million in research funding from the State and Federal Government, Industries and consultancies. Dr Kaparaju is an expert on training programs in Renewable Energy Systems, Sustainable Energy Systems and Biogas Technology and has extensive expertise in facilitating workshops/seminars in biomass to bioenergy and anaerobic digestion technology. He has experience in training waste management professionals in energy recovery through biogas production. RESEARCH EXPERTISE - Expert on Biomass to Biofuels conversion technologies, Organic Waste Management, Anaerobic Digestion Technology, Environmental Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering, Biomass Pre-treatment and Characterization, Energy-Environment, Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Mitigation, Process Design and Feasibility Studies for Waste to Energy projects especially biogas plants. - Research on Anaerobic digestion process for waste and wastewater treatment, biohydrogen, biogas and bioethanol production from organic wastes, biomass pretreatment to enhance biofuel production, nutrient and energy recovery from industrial and agricultural wastes and wastewaters and BioCNG production. - Published more than 50 research papers peer reviewed international journals, 2 book chapters and more than 20 publications in international conferences and workshops. Total citations are 1931 with average citations of 120 per year and average citation per paper of 44. H-index is 24 (WoS). TEACHING EXPERIENCE - Has taught several courses in Environmental Engineering, Renewable Energy and Environmental Biotechnology and Waste management. - Won Lecturer of the Year Awards 2016, 2017 and 2018 - Supervised several coursework and research projects in this area. CONSULTANT Working as consultant to several industries and wastewater utilities in Australia on waste management, biogas plants design and operation, vehicle fuel production and providing analytical support and carrying out lab-scale biochemical methane potential tests. PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS - Member of the expert subsidiary group on biogas and biomethane production from waste, IIT Delhi, India - Member of Bioenergy Australia - Member of Biogas Taskforce, Bioenergy Australia - Member of Waste Management Taskforce, Bioenergy Australia - Member of Circular Economy Taskforce, Bioenergy Australia - Member of AusBiotech - Has given several oral presentations and seminars at various national and international conferences and workshops.
